Surprise! Through a video published on Twitter, the organization of the Giro d'Italia has announced the participation of superstar Tadej Pogacar. This is a real surprise, as many assumed that the Slovenian star would primarily focus on the Tour de France again. At 25 years old, Pogacar is set to make his first appearance at the Giro, marking an exciting debut.
Twice Pogacar and twice Jonas Vingegaard: over the last four years, the Tour de France was won either by the young super-Slovenian or the stoic Dane. So, it was certainly expected that this year one of them would snag a third win this year, particularly after the intense battles seen in the last two editions, which Vingegaard won. "There was a fight for every second. It was tough day after day," we recently wrote in a column.
Zonneveld regrets that the big stars "are now avoiding each other"
The announcement that Pogacar will be racing in the Tour of Italy has taken everyone by surprise. On social media, cycling enthusiasts and experts alike are buzzing with reactions to this unexpected news. There's also a lot of talk about what Jonas Vingegaard's plans might be now. "It's kind of a letdown not having the Pogacar-Vingegaard face-off, with Pogacar opting for the Giro. Unless Vingegaard now also changes his schedule, of course," noted cycling journalist Thijs Zonneveld. "It's a bit disheartening to see these top cyclists, who have consistently sought each other out in competition, start to go their separate ways. I miss those rivalries."
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, cycling fans do not need to mourn: Pogacar is also expected to ride in the Tour. However, we will probably have to wait until Monday for the official confirmation, when the team holds its annual media day in Spain. There, the Slovenian will provide more details and explanations.
More to come soon!
