On Tuesday, Geraint Thomas will not start the grueling final week of the Giro d'Italia as the leader. The Welsh rider handed over his pink jersey to Bruno Armirail, but he will still have to give his all in the third week. He discussed it extensively on his own podcast.
"We're not going to give everything to keep the pink jersey because we don't want to burn out guys like Ben Swift and Salvatore Puccio. It wasn't worth it," said Thomas, who sees potential allies in Groupama-FDJ. "It will be interesting to see what Groupama-FDJ will do. It depends on what Thibaut Pinot is going to do; he's also going for the polka dot jersey now."
According to Thomas, there are several reasons why the Giro hasn't been too enjoyable to watch so far. "Riding for the jersey takes a tremendous amount of energy. Primoz Roglic has taken a tumble a few times - maybe he's feeling the effects of that. Remco Evenepoel has gone home, which also makes a difference."
Thomas not happy with jury
Thomas also reflected on the past stages, during which he was not pleased with the Giro's jury. "They gave everyone a warning because helmets were taken off to put on caps. It was 3 degrees, it was raining. I had two rain jackets on."
"So if you want to do that, you should stop," Thomas says, shaking his head. "Mate, you should try walking ten kilometers in the rain. Come on, a yellow card for the peloton," he continues, expressing his bewilderment about the incident.
